Trying to Conceive? A Practical Preconception Support Plan

Preparing questions together before a preconception appointment. Illustrative scene.

A useful preconception plan brings together your health history, everyday care and a clear date for medical review. If pregnancy is taking longer than expected, organizing these pieces can make the next conversation easier. An optional wellness routine can sit alongside that plan, with realistic expectations about what it can offer.

When should you seek a fertility evaluation?

For regular unprotected intercourse without known fertility concerns, ASRM recommends evaluation after 12 months if you are under 35, or 6 months at 35 or older. Over 40, more immediate evaluation may be appropriate. Seek earlier assessment for absent or irregular periods or a known condition affecting fertility. These are starting points for care, not requirements to wait. ASRM fertility evaluation guidance.

You can ask for a preconception appointment before reaching an infertility threshold. Bring questions about your own circumstances, including previous pregnancy losses or a need for donor conception. A general online timeline cannot decide your individual care.

Make one page of useful information

  • Your timeline: When you began trying, recent period dates, and any change in bleeding or pain.
  • Your health history: Previous pregnancies, losses, pelvic procedures, diagnoses and treatments already tried.
  • Everything you use: Medicines, vitamins, supplements and external herbal products, with labels or ingredient details.
  • Your questions: What needs checking, what can continue, and when to review the plan.

Where a male partner contributes sperm, evaluation should consider both partners and include his history and semen assessment as appropriate. A fertility concern should not automatically become one person’s responsibility. ASRM evaluation guidance.

Keep everyday preparation manageable

Review medical conditions, medicines and vaccination needs with your healthcare professional. Ask for help stopping tobacco or alcohol if needed, and make room for support when worry affects daily life. You do not need a perfect routine to deserve care. CDC preconception guidance.

CDC recommends 400 micrograms of folic acid daily for people who can become pregnant, starting before pregnancy. Ask your clinician about your individual needs and continue recommended prenatal nutrition. An external pouch does not supply folic acid or replace a prenatal supplement. CDC folic acid guidance.

Choose a small routine you can sustain: a shared appointment calendar, a brief weekly conversation, or a notebook that keeps your questions in one place. Track what helps your day without treating every sensation as a sign of conception.

Fertility Nourish: a non-swallowed preconception routine

Fertility Nourish is Five Essences’ complementary preconception wellness formula: dry herbs sealed in a fabric pouch worn externally over the navel. Its practical distinction is the format—nothing to swallow or brew. Consider whether wearing a pouch suits your comfort, budget and existing care plan.

Five Essences has described pregnancies after external pouch use in selected historical practice records. Those uncontrolled observations do not establish causation, a typical success rate or equivalence to the current retail formula. They cannot show that a pouch improves egg quality, implantation or live-birth chances.

Discuss ingredients and use with your clinician before starting, especially during fertility treatment. Stop Fertility Nourish if pregnancy is suspected or confirmed, or if a skin reaction develops; pregnancy safety is not established. HFEA also advises checking complementary therapies with the treating clinician. HFEA guidance.

Choose your next step

To see what’s normal month to month, read how long it takes to get pregnant, and to time sex well, see how to know if you’re ovulating. If your tests have all come back normal, our guide to unexplained infertility explains the options; if you have PCOS, see how to get pregnant with PCOS.

If you are weighing treatment, use the natural conception or IVF after 35 decision guide to prepare questions about timing. For broader cycle concerns, return to the women’s cycle and fertility guide.

If an external wellness routine fits your clinician-reviewed plan, check the current use directions and purchase terms on the product page, and request ingredient information for your clinician.
