Short answer: No natural remedy cures or reverses memory loss or dementia, but several natural approaches help daily life. The strongest evidence is for steady habits: physical activity, good sleep, social contact, hearing and vision care, and controlling blood pressure. Among herbs, lemon balm and lavender have small studies for agitation, and ginkgo has mixed results. Start by checking for treatable causes of memory loss, and choose remedies with your doctor so they fit safely alongside medicines.
First, rule out treatable causes
Not all memory loss is dementia. Before trying any remedy, ask the doctor to check for causes that can improve with treatment: low vitamin B12, thyroid problems, depression, sleep apnea, hearing loss, and medicines that dull thinking, such as some sleep, allergy and bladder medicines. A sudden change can also be delirium, which needs prompt care.
Natural approaches with the strongest support
The 2024 Lancet Commission on dementia concluded that nearly half of dementia cases are linked to risk factors people can change. The habits behind those findings are also the most reliable natural remedies for memory:
- Move every day: walking, tai chi or any activity that raises the heart rate.
- Stay connected: conversation, groups, visits and shared activities.
- Protect sleep, and get sleep apnea treated if present.
- Treat hearing and vision loss: hearing aids and glasses keep the brain engaged.
- Control blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, and avoid smoking and heavy drinking.
- Eat a varied, plant-rich diet with fish, olive oil, nuts and vegetables.
For someone already living with dementia, music, daylight, a steady routine and calm surroundings ease everyday life. Our guide to sundowning shows how these work in the evenings.
Herbs for dementia and memory: what the evidence says
| Herb | What research shows | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Ginkgo | Mixed; a large U.S. trial found it did not prevent dementia | Bleeding risk with blood thinners |
| Lemon balm | Small trials for agitation in dementia | Can add to sedating medicines |
| Lavender (scent) | Used as aromatherapy for agitation; results vary | Never swallow essential oils |
| Sage | Small, early studies on memory | Some types are unsafe in large amounts |
| Ginseng | Small studies, inconsistent results | Interacts with blood thinners and diabetes medicines |
Supplements are not reviewed for effectiveness before sale, and quality varies. Many “memory” products promise far more than any study supports. Our guide to memory supplements explains how to judge them, and herbs for sleep covers which herbs to avoid with liver or medicine concerns.
Chinese herbs for dementia: the TCM view
Traditional Chinese Medicine describes the brain as the “sea of marrow,” nourished by the Kidney essence, which naturally declines with age. Memory loss is understood as this essence weakening, often alongside “phlegm” clouding the mind. TCM formulas for forgetfulness traditionally include herbs such as ginseng, polygala (yuan zhi) and acorus (shi chang pu), chosen for each person’s pattern by a practitioner.
These are traditional concepts, and research on them is still early. Some traditional herbs carry real safety concerns, so Chinese herbal formulas should only be taken under a licensed practitioner who knows all your medicines. Our guide to Chinese medicine for insomnia explains how to use TCM safely.
TCM also applies herbs externally, including at the navel. Brain Vitality follows that tradition: a sealed fabric pouch of dry herbs, worn at the navel and held by a reusable belt, with nothing to swallow. In Dr. Wang’s practice records, family caregivers of older adults living with dementia described what they noticed in sleep and daytime alertness during pouch use; these are selected, uncontrolled observations, explained in the evidence overview. It works alongside medical care, never in place of it.
Natural remedies alongside dementia medicines
Natural approaches and prescribed medicines can work together. Keep a complete list of everything taken, including teas, supplements and herbal products, and share it with the doctor and pharmacist. If a dementia medicine causes side effects, our guides to donepezil and memantine side effects explain what to watch for and what to ask; never stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
Questions about natural remedies for memory loss
What is the best natural remedy for memory loss?
Regular physical activity has the strongest and most consistent evidence, together with good sleep, social contact and treating hearing loss and high blood pressure. No single herb or supplement matches these.
Can natural remedies reverse dementia?
No. Natural approaches can support daily life, mood and sleep, and treating causes such as low B12 or thyroid problems can restore memory when those are the cause. Dementia itself is not reversed by any remedy.
What herbs help with dementia?
Lemon balm and lavender have small studies for agitation, and ginkgo has mixed results for memory. Check every herb with a pharmacist, since several interact with common medicines.
